Job opportunities in health and social care are set to increase between now and 2022. Here is a selection of key health and social care roles that you might be interested in.


Projected job openings between now and 2022 – 12,800

Play-workers plan and supervise games, activities and trips for children which develop their physical and social skills as well as their independence.

Career as a care worker

Projected job openings between now and 2022 – 296,100

Care workers respond to the individual needs of people who need care and support, looking after their wellbeing, care and support. They assist them in all aspects of living including washing, dressing and eating.

Career as a counsellor

Projected job openings between now and 2022 – 9,900

Working in schools, colleges, youth agencies, the voluntary sector or the National Health Service, counsellors encourage people to work through their feelings in a supportive and confidential environment. Counsellors must be accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Occupational therapist careers

Projected job openings between now and 2022 – 13,700

Occupational therapists work with people of all ages, considering their physical, social and psychological needs in order to support them so that they can engage in their usual occupations, such as working, studying and participating in hobbies.

Speech and language therapist

Speech and language therapists assess and diagnose conditions. They design programmes of treatment and coach and counsel clients.

Social worker careers

Social workers provide advice and emotional support to enable people to live successfully within their communities.  They also intervene in cases of safeguarding concerns and have special legal powers to act.

Social worker is a protected job title.

    This means that it can only be used by someone who is registered by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) who have a professional qualification in social work.


Social services manager

Social services managers provide leadership. They plan work schedules, and coordinate the resources needed to protect the welfare of certain groups like children or the elderly.
