If you’re bright, ambitious and keen to kick-start your career, then our Higher Apprenticeship could be ideal for you.
A Higher Apprenticeship is an alternative route to becoming an ICAEW Chartered Accountant. You can choose to work in Assurance/Audit or Tax – but both programmes will give you the experience, support and on-the-job learning you need to get your career off to a great start.
Not sure an ICAEW Higher Apprenticeship is for you? Here’s a bit more about what’s involved.
- You’ll have constant support and guidance from ICAEW and your authorised training employer.
- You’ll study ICAEW CFAB whilst working as an apprentice.
- You’ll have a full-time job, salary, and study options that could see you qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant by the age of 21.

I have gained so much from doing a Higher Apprenticeship instead of going to university. I have practical knowledge which you can’t read from a text
book, and I’ve also started to grow my professional network. This gives me a head start for when I start trying to win clients at work. I’m an auditor, so I am usually based at my clients’ offices. I find it really exciting as this means that no week is the same and I get to see such a wide range of businesses. The Higher Apprenticeship doesn’t just consist of exams either; I’ve also chaired meetings and delivered Power Point presentations to senior members of staff. This experience will be key in my career.
the best thing about doing a Higher Apprenticeship is that you can earn and learn and the same time. I have been able to use everything that I’ve learnt and relate it to the workplace, which really helps to gain a better understanding of it all. The qualification you do as part of the Higher Apprenticeship (ICAEW CFAB) is also part of the ICAEW, so I have been able to attend events put on by my local student society. This gave me a sense of belonging and a great support network.
I would recommend a Higher Apprenticeship to everyone who is keen for a career in accounting. I think it is the best decision I have made to date. But be prepared to sacrifice your time around exams to ensure you are thoroughly prepared. I think it’s all about preparation with exams. Even though it may not seem appealing to give up your weekend, the feeling when you pass can’t be beaten!’
