Tuesday, 28 January 2014 – £100,000 Presentation
As part of the selection process for the apprenticeship, we were asked to deliver a ten minute presentation on how we would spend and invest £100,000 inheritance. I thought it might be interesting to share how I answered this, as I am sure no two people would be the same!
- £15,000 on a car. The model of car I said I would like, which I still do, was a Fiat 500. This car is under £10,000, leaving me with plenty of money to cover a year or two for insurance, tax and petrol.
- £3,000 shopping. Of course part of the money would go towards a shopping trip! Me and mum would go to Manchester and we could maybe pick a bag each. I said I would buy a Kitchen Aid, but I still have no idea which colour!
- £10,000 to my parents. This would just be a sort of thank you for everything gift. They could do whatever they like with it, and it would make me feel really happy being able to give them that money.
- £2,000 donation to Monkey World. I could write pages and pages about Monkey World, but basically I think it is absolutely fantastic. It is a sanctuary down in Dorset that rescues and rehabilitates monkeys from all over the world. If you ever see Monkey Life on TV you should watch it!
- £30,000 premium bonds. I think premium bonds are a great way of saving money as every £1 bond you buy enters you into the monthly prize draw to win money. Dad usually just won £25 (which I still think is brilliant) but you can win up to £1,000,000!
- £30,000 savings. As I am only 18 and still living at home with no major outgoings, I can afford to save quite a high proportion of the money. Each year I would transfer money to top up my ISA allowance as it is tax-free.
- 10,000 on shares. I said I would buy shares in Tesco, United Utilities, BP and Whitbread. I think everyone will always need water and oil, Tesco is just getting bigger every day, and Whitbread own Costa Coffee which seems to be opening up on every high street! I also wanted to ensure I was spread across different sectors.
At the end I was asked would I not have opened a stocks and shares ISA, which I hadn’t heard of at the time - but now I would! I was also asked my favourite flavour of cake to bake. Under pressure I answered chocolate, but it’s probably more like lemon!
The presentation was the scariest ten minutes of my life, but certainly also the quickest as it just absolutely flew by!
