Film review: Mockingjay Part 1 By Christy Au

Mockingjay Part 1, the first part of the finale to the Hunger Games trilogy which is set in the post-apocalyptic city of Panem tells the tale of Katniss Everdeen, played by Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence.

Everdeen, who becomes a symbol of salvation and rebellion against a brutal regime which tries to suppress all in its way leads a rebellion against the Capitol, where the government is situated.

Movie fans in China are being disappointed yet again with the news that the first part of the final Hunger Games instalment is being ‘indefinitely postponed’. While China is admired for being one of the world’s leading economies, pioneering worthwhile research in many fields of study, their human rights record is regularly questioned by Western governments.

They seem to be set on restricting Chinese citizens’ access to ‘foreign influential media’ – especially anything which might hint at themes of political revolution or rebellion.

With a storyline which revolves around the collapse of a government, the China Times reported that the postponement of the release of the movie in China may be due to its underlying message being a little too close to home for a country which is currently dealing with political unrest, in its own region of Hong Kong.
