B&CE’s Charitable Trust is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the Mowlem Award 2017.
Now in its third year, the Award is granted to an organisation that really makes a difference to training and the promotion of health and safety in the construction industry. Submissions must be received by Tuesday 18th April 2017, and the eligibility criteria is set out below.
2016’s Mowlem Award winner was Women into Construction, an independent not-for-profit organisation that promotes gender equality in construction. They provide bespoke support to women wishing to work in the construction industry, and help contractors recruit highly motivated, trained women, helping to reduce skills gaps and create a more gender-equal work-force.

Previous winners, Women into Construction and the Shekinah Mission, have used the funding to unlock employment opportunities in construction for vulnerable people. I look forward to receiving this year’s applications!”
Kath Moore, Managing Director of last year’s winner, Women into Construction said:
Women into Construction were delighted to win the Mowlem Award in 2016. The Award is being used to fund three women to access the site supervisors’ safety training scheme (SSSTS), three women to access the site managers’ safety training scheme (SMSTS), and a further three women to access the national executive board of safety and health (NEBOSH) training, as well as providing work-experience to consolidate their training. It also provided funding for a further 20 women to gain work experience on a construction project, and the mentoring and support necessary to enable them to progress into employment. This was a very positive intervention, allowing women who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to gain access to training and employment within the construction industry.”
How to apply
Prospective applicants should explain in 1,000 words or less how their organisation would use the £20,000, with a clear focus on construction training and health and safety.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday 18th April 2017.
Applications should be sent in a Word document, along with any supporting visuals or graphs to firstname.lastname@example.org (maximum attachment size of 5MB).
- £20,000 to be awarded on an annual basis to a private sector, charity or training organisation (or company involved in training) that has made a significant difference to the construction industry, in any area of the UK or Northern Ireland;
- Training to have helped (or be helping as a minimum) more than 50 individuals within the calendar year;
- Training must include recognised construction industry accreditations;
- Training must be linked to an employer or placement (in order to gain hands on experience) i.e. one day a week day release; and
- The company/organisation must have an ongoing relationship with the Charitable Trust and be able to give regular updates on their work and the use of the monies. This relationship must continue for at least the year the funding is given.
